Ben Fritz

I recently had an opportunity to speak with Ben Fritz, whose work ethic is as inspiring as his doughnuts.

By: Joshua Conner

One of my main motivations for featuring Ben Fritz is because he is the best of both worlds. His work ethics, motivational social media presence & entrepreneurial spirit, inspires me personally & professionally. While the company he co-founded Beacon Doughnuts provides not only scrumptious doughnuts, but is also a brand that positively impacts people. Fritz is a personal growth coach and co-founder of Beacon Doughnuts, based in Chicago, Illinois.

What is a day in the life of Fritz like?

“I usually get up at, let’s say 6 am. I get up, journal. So what journaling looks like for me, is basically freewrite, I have like a big notebook so, I just freewrite, one of those large pages, until I’m done. So it’s like stream of consciousness, I don’t have a specific topic or anything.  Then after that I’ll write a gratitude list of 5 things that I am thankful for. I do a 10 minute meditation using the calm app, and then at that point, I’m ready to eat some breakfast. I get my breakfast, and then I head to the gym, and train a few sessions. Then I come back somewhere along lunch time. I come back, I make some lunch, then I’ll relax for an hour or so.

Usually for the middle part of the afternoon, from 1:30 to 4:30, I’ll do administrative type of stuff, and I’ll write anything that I need to get done. If I have errands to do, I’ll take care of that in that part of the day. Then I will go back to the gym for a couple of sessions at night or I’ll do some of my life coaching calls with clients. Then usually around 7:30 or so, I’ll call it quits for the night. I just try to eat my last bite of food, hanging out with my fiancé and my dog, do a little reading, watch some Netflix, and just some random relaxing time, and try to be in bed around 10:00,” said Fritz.

Fritz often posts insightful quotes on his Instagram, but which one is his favorite?

“Oh man, that’s a really good one, let’s see. That’s a hard one to narrow down, I have so many good ones. Oh, I’ve got a good one, I actually have it saved to use as a post on social media at some point, but the quote is:

“May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears,” said Nelson Mandela.

I know that it’s short, but so insightful at the same time,” said Fritz.

Fritz says the title of his life story would be, “You never know,” and Bradley Cooper would play him in a movie.

What donut matches Fritz personality?

“You know, I’m actually going to go with an old-fashioned, because it is very simple, but incredible. To me, I think I have very simple rules that I live my life by and I think it’s a great way to do it,” said Fritz.

Fritz’s most memorable year is this year, although he aspires to make every year memorable.

“I would say this year, and I hope the trend continues. I think if each year of my life is not my most memorable, then I am doing something wrong. It’s been like a crazy year for me, most recently had some health issues, I’ve kind of been in the worst health I’ve been in. That was a big challenge and still parts of it continue to be a challenge. I am grateful, I think it’s been an opportunity to open my eyes, just to me personally and life in general.

I got engaged last year, so it doesn’t quite fall in, I was 15 days short of 2018, but still I’m going to count that. So wedding planning, and learning a lot about my relationship. Which I always love to be learning, especially with someone else, I think you can learn at an even faster rate about yourself and who you are in a relationship, that’s been great,” said Fritz.

Fritz also explained this year is his most memorable because he opened Beacon Doughnuts with his cousin and he started life/personal growth coaching.

“I think just in general this year, because this has been a good year for learning. I hope every year, I’m doing bigger and better things,  but also learning. With learning comes failure and success, and that’s what I want. So this year was great, but I hope to make next year more memorable,” said Fritz.

Jockey

Jockey has been a trailblazer in men’s underwear ever since creating the men’s brief in 1934. Eight decades later Jockey is still showing them while expanding their family.

By: Joshua Conner

I first became a fan of Jockey, after I learned about how they pioneered the men’s brief. I really became a fan of the brand, after they sponsored the Men’s Health Ultimate Guy Search contest, it was a collaboration of my two favorite things men’s attire and Men’s Health Magazine.

Jockey is an industry leader in men’s underwear, activewear, thermals and culture. They are sold in numerous retailers including Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, Belk, & Target to name a few. They have inspired the masses with there Show Em & Jockey Being Family campaigns. Jockey has also had a diverse repertoire of brand ambassadors. Baltimore Orioles All Star Jim Palmer,  American model & actor Aaron O’Connell, former football quarterback & baseball outfielder for the New York Mets Tim Tebow, USMC Vet Chris Van Etten, Actor Remi Adeleke & most recently Pro Dog Rescuer Zach Skow. Jockey also has a great social media presence, with over 73,000 followers on Instagram.

Kennedy Gilbertson is a Jesus follower, father, financial professional, freelance: fashion, fitness, and runway model, internationally published & avid wearer of Jockey underwear.

Gilbertson first Jockey product was the underwear three years ago, but what is his preference?

“Boxer briefs,” he says.

How does Gilbertson #showem?

“I guess how I show em is by how I conduct myself in all my everyday affairs, how I live, and the message that I give to people. I mean, you follow me on my social media,  I try to be as: transparent, honest, and open as I can about my life-like my past & what’s currently going on in my life. Really that’s the thing about life, it happens, whether that’s good, bad or indifferent. I think with the social media age we are in today, a lot of people try to paint a pretty picture that everything is rainbows and butterflies and that’s just not true, it’s not real life.

I think by being authentic, transparent and showing people who you really are, they can relate to you. I think that helps break down barriers and cross over boundaries and that helps connect with people,” said Gilbertson.

If Gilbertson could try another Jockey product, what would it be?

“You know, living in Minnesota, thermals would probably be a good this time of year. I could say probably sleepwear or activewear. My daughter gives me a hard time, being a fashion and fitness model, because I rarely wear the clothes. I rotate about 3 shirts, t-shirts, shorts and activewear. I have a closet full of clothes, but I am always looking for something comfortable. I’m at the office during the day and at the gym, at night, I’m with the kids, so I like being in comfortable clothes. So I think athleisure or sleepwear, something that’s comfortable,” said Gilbertson.

SAXX

Ever since Trent Kitsch, had an epiphany for SAXX underwear in 2006, later establishing it in 2007, the brand has been supporting men to live a life with no status quo.

By: Joshua Conner

I will never forget when I purchased my first pair of SAXX underwear. They shined bright like a diamond, in the fog of men’s underwear, in the clearance rack of Marshall’s clothing.

SAXX Underwear is a sensation, integrating in both pop culture & outreach of men’s lives. SAXX’s instagram page has over 65,000 followers. ESPN Body issue alumni Jake Arrieta & Kevin Love, have both served as brand ambassadors. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy even rocked some in a Fourth of July Instagram post. SAXX even created a Movember print, which assists in raising funds for men’s health research.

Danny Page is a performance and nutrition coach, based in Gilbert, Arizona. Page can be considered an influencer with over 86,000 followers on Instagram & 66,000 likes on his Facebook fan page.

“Tactful, driven, confident, and low key,” said Page about what his SAXX underwear say about him.

The first SAXX product that Page purchased were a red, white and blue, Fourth of July print.

“I got my first pair and I fell in love with them,” said Page.

Page’s favorite SAXX product is the straight black boxer brief with the SAXX logo on top.

“That’s my favorite one, I probably have 6 or 7 pairs of just those black ones and wear them everyday,” said Page.

SAXX, has a variety of tops, bottoms and underwear. Page said that he would like to try there tops, because of how he likes the fit of their underwear so much.

SAXX’s hashtag is #nostatusquo, but how does Page live by no status quo?

“You do that by never comparing or contrasting yourself to any other individual, so you live in competition with yourself and not with other people, or other companies or stigmas,” said Page.

Page makes a positive impact in the world, by using his platform of Instagram to share his purpose and why. Page describes it as his “I believe” statement.

“That I believe statement Josh, is I believe how you show up for your physical health, is how you will show up for your business life, family life and spiritual life,” said Page.

Page shares this with as many people as possible. He also makes a positive impact through service and support of others.

If Page’s mantra were a hashtag what would it be?

#goagainsttheflow, said Page.

On June 9-10, 2018, Bodybuilding.com presented The Fit Expo ™ Chicago, sponsored by Subway Restaurants at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois. The Fit Expo ™ Chicago was a great success with social media integration, familiar faces and an opportunity that took this intrepid blogger out of his comfort zone.

For $25 Saturday or Sunday, or a $40 weekend package, you will receive access to free samples, classes, cash winning competitions, seminars, and celebrity guests photo ops.

In my prior years of covering The Fit Expo ™ Chicago, my primary motivation was to get celebrity guests interviews. This year, I decided to take a more immersive approach, and give a brief highlight reel of some of the best moments that you can discover at the expo.

The fanfare of The Fit Expo ™ actually began before you even entered the door. Besides, the ticket deals you find by following the special guests on social media, attendees were encouraged to download the Fan! Guru application. The application really helped me get a preview of the great events and information on the special guests expected to arrive. The other pre-show sign up offering was the, “WBFF Workshop: Posing Class & Fitness Modeling Success Seminar” taught by TJ Hoban and Caroline De Campos. My intention for signing up was for an immersive reporting experience, little was I aware I was able to have a fun opportunity to explore outside of my comfort zone.

During the WBFF Workshop: Posing Class & Fitness Modeling Success Seminar is where the fun began. Not only was it taught by Bodybuilding.com Bodies of Work: Volume 6 first couple TJ Hoban & Caroline De Campos, it also had a special guest consultant WBFF Pro Fitness Model Dusten Nelson. Which was a pleasant surprise because Dusten is one of my social media followers.

It began with the posing class at Main Stage C. It was gentleman first and then ladies. An observation made was this was the first time there were more gentleman than ladies. After some encouragement from Dusten and TJ, I decided to press my luck. I always understood that showing a physique takes work, however I never knew how much mechanics and personality come to play.

“Quarter turn, half turn, and abs pose,” were just some of the many nuggets of wisdom that Dusten taught the guys as he instructed us on how to look ornamental and functional with style and substance.

During the Fitness Modeling and Success Seminar, TJ Hoban and Caroline De Campos enlightened the audience with many golden nuggets of wisdom about the WBFF, social media and the fitness industry.

“Looking your best, having the best pose and eluding your best confidence,” said TJ Hoban on the keys of success for the WBFF.

“We are a family, we support each other and help each other,” said Caroline De Campos.

After the seminar, TJ and Caroline had a photo-op, which included Instagram story shout outs.

Social media played a huge role in the Fit Expo ™ this year. Whenever you went to a celebrity guest booth, not only could you get a selfie, they also asked your Instagram handle to give you a shout out.

One celebrity guest who had two days of long lines to get a photo-op was the motivated, brawny and charismatic Brad Castleberry. What made the Castleberry experience so unique, is how he had a meet and greet with every fan, before every photo.

In addition to the photo ops, exhibitor booths also gave great experiences.

From competing for an Amazon gift card at the Orangetheory Fitness ® booth, or tasting delicious electrolyte tea from Honest Tea ® .

Ironically, the Fit Expo ™ is a great place to get a cup of iced coffee. Adam Von Rothfelder Strong Coffee Company, offered either a hot cup or cold brew of their delicious healthy coffee.

You never know who you will meet at The Fit Expo ™. While taking the Nordic Track challenge at Gideon Akande booth, I ran into a former co-worker from my Command Center security days Abraham Elias (Fit Ops Foundation).

“You never know who you are going to see at The Fit Expo ™,” said Gideon.

One of the most powerful mantras came from Corporate Wellness Speaker and one of the stars of Netflix “The Perfect Physique” film David Morin.

“Focus, intention and action,” said David, during the Meet the All Star Cast of The Perfect Physique film seminar Q and A.

I was grateful to have the opportunity to cover the Fit Expo ™.

The Fit Expo

The Fit Expo ™ Chicago comes back to the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center on June 9-10, 2018. As it returns, I take a look back on it’s success from previous years.

By: Joshua Conner

I will never forget when I first learned about the Fit Expo Chicago. 2 years ago, I was on Twitter, at the time and one of my inspiration, that I followed avidly tweeted that he was going to be there. This caused me to follow the link, and I discovered more of my favorite fitness role models were going to attend. So for weeks, I started posting about how I was looking forward to attending to see these great people from the fitness industry. Little did I realize that the marketing manager at the time, saw me and asked if I wanted to be a blogger for the event through a direct message on Twitter. I ecstatically said “yes”.

The Fit Expo ™ Chicago is presented by title sponsor Bodybuilding.com and Subway Restaurants. The Fit Expo ™ is , “Chicago’s largest, action-packed, health and fitness event,” according to the press release on May 16, 2018.

The press release also states that it will provide attendees with a variety of activities, like fitness competitions, group exercise workouts and healthy eating demonstrations.

“This year, featured competitions and events include; Cross-fit style adult team competitions, Power-lifting, Dodge-ball, Battle of the Bars, and a Fitness Star Model Search. The Fit Expo ™ Chicago will be held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, 5555 N. River Road, Rosemont, Hall A,” according to the press release.

One of the reasons why I look forward to The Fit Expo ™ every year is because of the celebrity athletes and fitness influencers. Over the course of my time covering the event, I have had a chance to meet some of the most positive people in the fitness industry. Some of which are returning this year. During the course of covering the event, I had an opportunity to interview some of the cast of The Perfect Physique including David Morin, TJ Hoban and Matt Christianer, all mentioned are on the special guest list scheduled to return.

TJ Hoban and Caroline De Campos, who made history being the first couple appearing as the first couple on Bodybuilding.com Bodies of Work will even be teaching a seminar for aspiring models and those who want to compete on the stage.

I also had a chance to meet NBC Strong trainer Bwyile White. Speaking of Strong, another trainer from the show Adam Von Rothfelder is also scheduled to appear representing Strong Coffee Company.

“There will be many celebrity athletes and fitness influencers appearing throughout the weekend including; Fitness Guru, Martial Artist & Tae Bo ® Creator, Billy Blanks; 4X Mr. Olympia Champion Jay Cutler; Social Media Fitness Star, Cassandra Martin; 4 X. Ms. Olympia, Oksana Grishina; social media & fitness personality, Maxx Chewning and internet sensation, trainer & coach, Massy Arias plus many, many more! Seminars and workshops are a highlight of the weekend where you can learn from the pros such as the cast of “The Perfect Physique” Films. Not to be missed is the bodybuilding posing routine Sunday by 2016 Classic Olympia Bodybuilding Winner, Danny Hester accompanied on live vocals by Monique’s Voice,” according to the press release.

“We’re thrilled to be heading back to Chicago for the fourth year and are committed to producing a unique, experiential event,” said Erin Ferries, Executive Director, TheFitExpo™. “Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast, a competitive athlete, a leisure sport fan, a health-minded mom, or you just like having a great time, TheFitExpo™ Chicago has something for,” according to the release.

I highly recommend everyone to attend the Fit Expo Chicago. I am looking forward to it this year. “Adult admission tickets are $25 per day or $40 for the entire weekend. Tickets for children 12 years and under are $10 per day and children under 6 are admitted free. Show hours are Saturday, June 9, 2018 from 10 AM – 6 PM and Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 10 AM – 5 PM.
